The Water Towns

Qibao is one of the first things we recommend doing in Shanghai. Shanghai is surrounded by 8 historical water towns. It would take a lot of time to visit all 8 towns but highly recommended if you have the time. If you are able to only fit one of the water-towns in your itinerary, we recommend Qibao. Qibao is located within the city and the easiest to access. This area is sort like a tiny little town. Qibao is most known for its exquisitely delicious street food vendors. The best times to visit are weekdays, as the weekends will be flooded with tourists. The shopping here is super cheap, and a must do. Another great stop in Qibao is the winery for obvious reasons. The views of the Qibao canals are breathtaking.

Tianzifang District

This neat little neighborhood hosts cutesy coffee shops, shopping, bars and some fantastic restaurants. There is a huge selection of hand crated souvenirs for the friends back home. The area is super touristy but well worth seeing.

Fuxing Park

This park is the chosen spot for the older crowd. This is the time to get those photos you always see. See the locals performing the traditional dances, the men playing mahjong and other neat things. This will be your chance to witness the Chinese art of calligraphy. This is a fantastic green space to have some quiet and relaxing time.

Yuyuan Gardens and City God Temple

Located in the old town of Shanghai adjacent to the City God Temple. Here you can photograph classic Chinese style gardening. A super cool spot to sample some of Shanghai style foods.

The Bunde Bund

Not at all popular with the locals but a fantastic opportunity to see the colonial building left behind. On the opposite side are all of the modern skyscrapers. What a contrasting glimpse into times then and now. If you are lucky enough to arrive there at sunrise you can get some fantastic photos of the elders practicing Tai chi.

Mohangshan Fifty

Referred to as M50 this is the contemporary art district of Shanghai. You will find top grade art galleries and museums here all on one street. The graffiti is especially cool and an Instagram moment.

Bund Fabric Market

Here you can have any type of clothing made, just show them a photograph and in no time the floors of seamstresses will have your garment in no time flat. Once you walk in you will be approached by pushy sellers, avoid them and move on to the more reputable and less pushy sellers.

Disney Land Shanghai

As in all Disney Land parks an all-out effort is built for your entertainment except this park is culturally designed for Chinese people.

Longhua Temple

This is the oldest Buddhist Temple in Shanghai dating back to 242 BC. The temple has an incredible history most especially when the Japanese occupation was happening.

Chongming Island

Here you can see one of the only remaining Confucian Temples left in China. The island is mostly wetlands, and sanctuaries. A great photo opportunity is the ancient fishing village.

Nanjing Road Walking Street

This is a very touristy area but well worth a visit. This is one of the older parts of Shanghai. The lights and charm will give you a wake-up call and remind you that you are actually in Shanghai. There is a small train you can ride if you are not up to walking the entire distance.

Shanghai Circus World.

This is another photo opportunity and Instagram must. The Chinese acrobatics teams will no doubt mesmerize you to the fullest extent. The light show is fabulous and the revolving stage is simply incredible.

Shanghai Wild Animal Park

If you don’t like seeing caged animals this park offers 2 separate zones. A traditional zoo and a safari. This is a great place for families or animal lovers.

Shanghai is magical, beautiful and mysterious. Ask any Chinese local which city in China they think is outstanding, the replies are overwhelmingly Shanghai. Enjoy your time in Shanghai we are confident it will be everything you imagined and more.
